TRAVEL — Where, oh where, to go on vacation

TravelWhere to go on vacation? That surely is the question. We all know that the summer is the perfect time for a "stay-cation" in the AntiHamptons. We are lucky enough to live in such an amazing pocket of the world — our fantastic beaches, never ending recreation choices and our rich revolutionary history — who wants to leave, right? But it's fall, and sometimes we get the itch to get off the island and venture out and abroad. Open our minds to the world and see exactly what is out there!

If you are looking for beaches, Jamaica is the place, Negril specifically. It is a tropical paradise just a few short hours via JFK. You can find a resort that is all inclusive, or family friendly, or romantic, or you can stay in a local B&B complete with scooter and tour the island like a local. We like Tensing Pen tensingpen.com for the couple looking to get away (don't forget to get a couples massage) and Beaches beaches.com for the family.

If shushing the slopes is what you are looking for in the winter. There are so many choices from the Swiss Alps in Europe to the Rocky Mountains out west to the White Mountains in the East. For a nearby family friendly trip we like Smugglers Notch smuggs.com in Vermont. They have babysitters, a kids ski school, and teen programs. If you are looking for more of a grownup vacation try the Snake River Lodge and Spa snakeriverlodge.com in Wyoming. Where you can sit by the fire and enjoy the mountain ambience in style.

If history is what you crave, go back to where one of the great civilizations began, Chichen Itza in Mexico's Mayan Yucatan. Hacienda Chichen haciendachichen.com is a beautiful resort that will arrange tours of the Yucatan Peninsula and open your eyes to the magic of the Mayans.

Where ever it is that you decide to go on vacation. Remember there is no place like home in the AntiHamptons. TOP

ANTIQUING — Begin the search, find a bargain

AntiquesBy definition an antique is any piece of furniture or decorative objects produced in a former period and valuable because of its beauty or rarity. Antiquing is different. Antiquing as a verb that means making an object look older through distressing. OR it is the act of shopping, identifying, negotiating or bargaining for antiques, vintage items or collectibles. We at the AntiHamptons, prefer the latter.

There are many wonderful places to go antiquing in our area. You just have to get in your car or better yet on your bike and ride around the AntiHamptons and you will find a vast array of top-notch antique stores with low, low prices. Here are a few of our favorites.

The top of our list has to be the Barntique Village located at 327 Montauk Highway in Moriches. The Barntique is a collection of vendors all placed together in a charming little village. When you get there and park your car you walk through this little village and it's a lot like going back in time. These tiny 1800's type buildings with rustic wood floors and low ceilings really make you feel like you are in a museum but able to purchase all the artifacts.

A little treasure trove is The Antique Center at 648 Montauk Highway this little store has everything a bargain hunting antiquarian is looking for. Jewelry, glassware, dolls, furniture. It's tucked away, and there is little parking, but the prices!!!! You are really getting a deal here.

Another wonderful place for treasures is Beacons Cottage located on Neighborhood Road in Mastic Beach. They style is very romantic cottage. They have an eclectic mix of old and new items so its definitely worth your while to stop in at least once a month to see what's new. It is the perfect place to get gifts for your loved ones. If you need to knock your significant others socks off with something romantic, this is the place to go.

One last stop on our Antique road is South Bay Auctions located at 485 Montauk Highway East Moriches. This is not a stop in on a saturday sort of an antique shop. They have scheduled auctions from estates in the area. Sometimes there are five a month, sometimes none. So you really have to keep up and check in with the web site of get on their mailing list to see what's coming up.

With so many opportunities to go antiquing in our area it is one of our favorite pastimes. Antiquing in the AntiHamptons is an experience that shouldn't be missed. TOP

SUMMER BEAUTY — Looking 'Hott' when it's Hot

Adapting your beauty regimen to the heat and humidity out here in the AntiHamptons is essential during the hot season. Time to put away the liquid foundation, break out the tinted sunscreen. Pack away the flat iron let those curls look carefree.

There are a few summer tricks that are necessary in these months. First, a couple of trips to the salons are in order. Time to get some highlights, nothing wild; just something to make you locks look sun-kissed.  Next get your nails in tip-top shape. Forever French’s on your fingers, hot pinks, tomato reds on your tootsies and for goodness sakes scrub those feet!

THE most important product in your beauty arsenal is sunscreen. Not just to keep the burns at bay, but WRINKLES people. Sun damage is the #1 cause of wrinkles not to mention skin cancer. You know they cut out skin cancer… big gaping holes… but I digress. We like Aveeno and Neutrogena 70+ in the aerosol can.  They make it easy to get full coverage and they feel nice and cool as you apply.

Don’t be afraid of shine. Dewy skin looks youthful. Ditch the powder and use blotter paper. To get a flush look try bronzer or better yet get an application of self-tanner. We like the ones that contain a pigment so you can see where they are being applied. So you can avoid that “oompaloompa orange striped” look.

What's Best for the kids — Playground or Pool?

COMING SOONAs parents we are always trying to make our children's lives as good or better than our own. We want them to succeed we want them to have everything we did and then some. So what is best for our children? A backyard playground or a pool. The decision is not so easy.

If your kids are young and aren't EXTREAMELY experienced swimmers, we suggest you get a fenced in playground. Children love playgrounds and having one at your house can be fantastic especially when they just have to get outside and play and you just have to get the laundry done. REMEMBER kids should be supervised on playgrounds at all times.

With more than 250 pool deaths annually at home pools can be dangerous for young ones. We suggest you get a membership to the Mastic Pool and have your young children learn to swim, and swim well. But once they are old enough —and skilled enough— to swim a pool is a excellent addition to any family. Just be sure to use all the proper safety equipment like fencing, pool alarms, lifesaving equipment and most of all... rules. Make sure your kids know that no one is to swim without a parent around. It's best to be safe while you enjoy your summer.

There are many businesses right here in the AntiHamptons specialize in pools or playgrounds. They would be more than happy to install for you. Just check our service directory for a great skilled LOCAL contractor. TOP
